• String tension: Strings with lighter gauges have less tension, making them easier to play. Thinner strings, however, also have thinner tones. The trick is finding a gauge that feels good on your fingers and sounds nice to your ears.
• Preferred tone: A string’s materials and construction affect its overall tone. Stainless steel produces the brightest tones. Nickel strings tend to be the least bright.
• String sets versus individual strings: Some manufacturers sell string sets for your convenience. Some musicians like to play with different gauge combinations to create their own custom tone. Don’t be afraid to experiment.
