Whether you’re a one-man-band or play with a group, the right microphone is essential to projecting the right sound to your audience. While microphones serve the same basic function, certain types are better suited for different applications. LAWK STAR Guitars offers Audix microphones and accessories that will set you up with the most important basics.
Microphone Buying Guide
- Polar patterns: Where a microphone accepts incoming sounds
- Omidirectional: Accepts sounds from all directions
- Bi-directional: Accepts sounds from the east and west, but not north and south
- Unidirectional: Accepts sounds from a specific area
- Multi-pattern: Provide you with the ability to change a mic’s polar pattern
- Frequency response: The range of frequencies (in hertz) to which a microphone responds.
- SLP-handling and sensitivity: The lower the number (expressed in decibels), the quieter the sound a mic can detect.
- Proximity effect: The bass tones produced when you stand closer to the mic.
Microphone Types
- Dynamic: More rugged; popular for use on stages. These mics often have high SPL-handling capabilities, and internal shock mounts allow for hand use. Dynamic microphones include ribbon microphones, drum microphones, mics for instruments, bullet mics, and wireless microphones.
- Condenser: More sensitive and delicate; popular for recording studios and overhead miking. These mics use an external power supply, phantom power or internal batteries. Types of condenser mics include large-diaphragm, small-diaphragm, dual-diaphragm, side-address, tube condenser, USB, shotgun, and boundary microphones.
