Envelope Filters
Envelope filters are effects pedal that give your playing a distinct choppy rhythmic sound, like the kind heard in disco and funk recordings from the 1970s. You hear it used a lot in Stevie Wonder’s Higher Ground album. Some people refer to envelope filters as auto-wahs, envelope-control filters or envelope followers. LAWK STAR Guitars gives you this funk-a-delic tone with guitar effects pedals by Pigronix and MXR.
Envelope Filter Basics
A filter is circuit that changes the shape of the frequencies that pass through it. A note’s envelope refers to its shape. Unlike other types of pedals, envelop filters respond to the input signal’s volume. Like wah pedals, they amplify some frequencies and cut out others. A low-pass filter, for example, amplifies low tones, but cuts the highs. Because the electronic circuit, or follower, is so responsive, you achieve effects with envelop filters that aren’t possible with traditional wah pedals.
The responsiveness of envelope filters requires a player to practice and become familiar with the pedal to achieve a consistent sound. Some even change their playing technique to create the sound they like. It’s important to note that not all envelope pedals are filters—some are phasers, delays, flangers or other effects that an envelope follower controls.
If you like funky tones, envelope filters are the ultimate toys. Never hesitate to contact LAWK STAR if you have any question about the pedals we have in stock.
