A headphone amplifier is a miniature speaker that amplifies a music source’s signal and sends it to a pair of headphones. They’re designed specifically for headphones instead of loudspeakers. The small power amplifier connects to a standard headphone jack or line output, giving you a clearer, more controlled sound that isn’t distorted at the musical peaks. At LAWK STAR Guitars, we have Rockman headphone amps for guitars and basses.

What to Look for in Headphone Amps

  • Impedance: In general, a headphone’s impedance should be 10 times the amplifier’s output impedance.
  • Power output: An amp that drives 500 milliwatts works well with most high-end headphones.
  • Signal-to-noise ratio: The noise the amp makes compared to the music signal; the larger the ratio, the better.
  • Root-Mean-Squared (RMS) power: Determines how loud the headphones will get. Keep in mind that listening to anything that’s over 85 decibels can cause permanent hearing damage.
  • Total harmonic distortion (THD): Less distortion is better. Look for a headphone amp that has less than 1 percent distortion.

If you have any questions about headphone amps or need help choosing the best one for your instrument, never hesitate to contact LAWK STAR.
