Bass Guitar Buying Guide

Body Style - Many bass guitars have a solid body. You’ll also find electric semi-hollow and hollow body basses with an acoustic sound. Acoustic basses are great if you don’t have an amp, and acoustic-electric basses are ideal if you like the acoustic sound, but want to amplify it.

Bass Pickups - Electric basses with active pickups have bright, percussive tones. Passive pickups give the instrument a fat, punchy sound, but don’t offer as much tonal control. If you like both tones, look for active pickups that you can adjust to sound like passive ones.
Other pickup types include single-coil, humbucker and split-coil. Single-coil pickups produce bright, clear tones that might seem noisy. Humbuckers cancel the noise and produce fatter tones, but can sound muddy at loud volumes. Split-coil pickups bring you the best qualities that single-coil pickups and humbuckers offer.

Neck Type - Basses have neck-through-body or bolt-on neck styles. Instruments with neck-through designs have necks that spans the length of the bass for greater sustain. Bolt-on styles have good string vibration transfer and sustain, as well as the ability to replace the neck.

Other considerations when shopping for a bass include tone wood, the number of strings and overall comfort. Tell the staff LAWK STAR about what you want in a bass and they’ll take the mystery out of finding the perfect instrument.
